About Us
First Step: A Response to Domestic Violence was founded in 1979 and incorporated in 1980. We have been in our current location in downtown Harrisonburg since 1986. We serve survivors of domestic and dating violence from the City of Harrisonburg and Rockingham County. We are the only agency in Harrisonburg that specifically serves and shelters survivors of domestic and dating violence. There is always a staff-member on site at First Step to answer the 24 hour hotline and meet in person with survivors. First Step also provides temporary shelter, as well as an array of other services to survivors and their children.
First Step staff is also available to talk with community members who know a survivor or who would like more information about domestic and dating violence and First Step’s services.
We believe in the importance of educating the community about Domestic Violence. Upon request we can schedule presentations and trainings to local individuals, businesses, organizations, civic groups and faith communities. We can also be found at local health fairs and community events with the First Step information table.
